Kekri Buck burning ceremony

Varvilahti

18:00-18:30
free entry

Come see, how sorrows will be burned to the wind with Kekri buck. Tuliryhmä Polte and Lintukoto will be performing during the ceremony.

We recommend the visitors to follow Kekri Buck’s burning from the beach on Suomenlinna Museum’s side of the bay and Artillery Bay’s bridge.

Lintukoto means originally a mythical place, which was located far in the south and southwest, at the limit of the word or in a place, where sky meets the earth according to the old beliefs. It was thought that there live small creatures, lintukotolaisia as in creatures of the sky’s verge. It was also believed, that migratory birds flew there following the Milky Way in the autumn to spend their winter at the Lintukoto. Nowadays it’s thought that lintukoto means a nice, safe and cozy place. Lintukoto, which is performing in Viaporin Kekri, combines in their music Helsinki’s familiar city soundscapes with old traditional instruments’ rough but beautiful sounds. The group’s wind instrument players are part of Wind on Wind -collective, and this performance is part of the collective’s 10-year anniversary program.

Kirsi Ojala is musician, who specializes in old wind instruments. She is interested about Baltic Sea area’s musical history and especially about wind instruments’ part in humans’ daily life and celebration.

Sound artist-jouhikko player Mikko H. Haapoja combines in his music electrified traditional instruments, Helsinki’s city soundscapes and machine-made comps.

Aino Ojala is a clarinettist, singer, and dancer, who studies musical theatre and is always ready to jump into interesting projects no matter the genre.

Veera Katila is a clarinettist with classical education, who has afterwards dived into folksy wind instruments’ world. Her newest conquests have been liru, mänkeri, Jew’s harp and puusarvi.

Roihu celebrates the group’s journey, which has lasted already 20 years. Because of the year of celebration during the event you will see a special mystic filled show. Can you hear the Baltic Sea’s whispers in the darkening night? Joik with us the spirits to dance and come celebrate the arrival of darkness with us to Suomenlinna. Roihu has been part of Viaporin Kekri since 2018.

The Dark Light of the Mind is a multisensory sound and video installation, where shadows crawl across the rough stone walls, and together with a mysterious soundscape they transform the gaunt arches and tunnels of Suomenlinna into a journey to the center of the mind.
